Steve Nelson has worked in and around the surety claims business since 1975. For the first 20 years, he was a partner in a large Dallas based law firm, representing sureties and contractors.  For the next five, he was CEO at a large Austin based construction company, where he experienced the surety claims process both as principal and claimant. For the next 25 years, he was the chief claims officer in a surety company that grew from a small regional surety with three employees to becoming a national surety and part of a Fortune 500 Company.

Steve has Chaired the Construction Law Sections of the Dallas Bar, Austin Bar, and State Bar of Texas. He is in his seventh year as President of the Surety Claims Institute. He has taught claims for the last ten years at NASBP’s Surety School and for the last twenty-five years, a graduate course in Construction Industry Dispute Resolution at the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Engineering. He is a Fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers and a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators. Steve is looking forward to sharing his thoughts on the evolution of surety claims handling over the past fifty years, with some thoughts on what the future holds for the industry.
